Following a start of term quality audit with one of our Further Education colleges, we have been involved in bringing college markbooks up to spec.

Two themes are key for us on tasks like these; data transparency and college-level oversight. You need unadulterated access to all the information that makes for valuable progress tracking:

  1. What are you tracking (essentially your assessment plan for the qualification delivery, plus unit breakdown for vocational courses)
  2. What are your target dates for delivery

How do we approach this:

Step 1:

Have an overview – we identify the gaps to resolve across the entirety of curriculum in terms of qualification tracking requirements then the gaps in tracking activity to identify teams in need of support in terms of assessment scheduling and grading

Step 2:

Get the right stakeholders in place – it is paramount to have the investment from quality team, senior and curriculum teams

Too often it is seen as a huge overhead on teams or individuals to get markbooks in place, but done right first time this eases with every following year of delivery of the same qualifications.
